Wow , am I a slacker or what ?! I am so behind on posts , I better get a move on….because…… Yippee!!! I have hit the road again ! My little nomad heart is jumping with joy ! In the meantime,  this is another belated post from the gorgeous,  awe inspiring,  truly magnificent Grand Canyon! After our delightful beachfront camping spot in Nevada we were looking forward to some cooler weather and trees ! Yes , trees!  Nothing like being in the desert to make you appreciate trees more 🙂
So , we hit the road and landed at the Grand Canyon. This was my second visit,  but still as memorable as the first.

Camp teardrop 🙂

The cakes was so thrilled about his “find” , we didn’t let him keep it though .

Sorry if it seems like I have dropped off the face of the earth ! After the go , go ,go  of exploring the southwest this past winter , I am actually at a standstill in Northern Utah at the moment. Taking a moment to slow down and sit a spell and figure out where the next destination will be. So , time to play catch up and post some sketches!

This sketch is from our camping spot on the shoreline of Lake Mohave in Nevada.  Probably one of the most beautiful free camping spots we discovered! We had a bit of a drive to get down to the camping area , but it was worth it as we positioned the teardrop a few feet from the water !

image

We also were able to go on a lovely hike above the beach area.

We would of spent more time here , but it was starting to get crowded and hot , so after two days we packed up and hit the road again 🙂 Thanks for the fun Lake Mohave!!

More robot doodles….

It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to living simple in the desert. No electricity,  no running water. Just learn to go with the flow and figure things out along the way . I did this sketch one afternoon before we were about to pack up and head somewhere new.

First of all , sorry it has been so long since I last posted !!! I’m slacking!  Honestly , it has been a combination of reasons. I do this on my phone and sometimes I don’t have the greatest cell reception in certain places and I have also fallen into the lazy habit of posting on my instagram account (@mysocalledartistlife) and not following thru on WordPress as well. Well , enough  is enough  !!! I am back ! 🙂 For some reason , while hanging in the desert this winter I started sketching robots …a lot…ha..ha..I think partly because of one particular camping spot which was in an agricultural area of Yuma , Arizona. I was seeing huge farming machinery everyday and also waking up to very loud, low flying planes with searchlights nearly every night. I was never quite sure if these were border patrol planes or crop dusting planes. It was an interesting , unusual camping experience in that location. And that is when the robot doodles started ! So , this was one of birdie as the best camping robot ever ! Ready to pack up camp or make a campfire at a moment’s notice !!!

The desert is starting to bloom and I discovered I have an allergy to something in it ! I think I have it narrowed down to a thorny bush. I remember brushing against it and being pricked. I ended up developing a very itchy red skin rash on my arms and legs. I think I spread it without realizing, by scratching my arms. Anyway , not fun at all ! I wasn’t able to sketch for a few days because it was on my hands as well. I think that was the worst part ! Ha..ha..I just sat and stared at my pens and paper. All is well now , no more rash. However , it is long sleeves from now on when I’m hiking !

image

Just some random doodles from my day in the desert ! OK , I only spotted one of these lovelies in real life . The other one was from my creep -o  imagination !

image

The desert life seems to be a magnet for interesting unique modes of transportation. I love it ! I feel like I’m in a real life version of a Richard Scarry Busytown book.

I don’t think a day goes by without at least one doodle featuring the cakes. He is my perfect little muse ! He is also my little shadow and follows me everywhere. I often end up having to balance my sketchbook on him  because he will be snoozing on my lap as I sketch ! I have a serious case of puppy love for the cakes 🙂 I love my little furry muse 🙂

In January the teardrop adventure stopped off for a week in Southern California at Anza-Borrego state park.

image

I couldn’t stop taking photos of the gorgeous desert landscape.

image

The badlands of Anza-Borrego , including a cakes selfie 🙂

Huge palm trees…and a mysterious man in a baseball hat…

image

We did quite a bit of exploring , even
hiking to a palm oasis in the desert !

image

And perhaps one of the best roadside attractions ever….a HUGE sea dragon sculpture.. there are 130 sculptures by the self taught artist Ricardo Breceda installed around the desert as public art. Unbelievable ! I was awestruck !
